MeliBio is an exciting new startup which is on a mission to recreate honey from plants using biotech. Darko Mandich the CEO highlights that over 2 billion people consumer honey everyday yet bees are in trouble, they are declining more than ever before. Bees are wonderfully adapted to pollinate - helping plants grow, breed and produce food. They do so by transferring pollen between flowering plants and to keep the cycle of life turning. The decline is caused by a combination of stresses:
1. Loss of their habitat i.e. urbanisation and trees being cut down
2. Usage of pesticides on our plants
3. The effects of climate change.
4. Large-scale beekeeping can actually harm or even worst kill bees.
Therefore a growing number of vegans are avoiding honey due to its exploitation of the hard working bees and the harvesting of their energy source is seen as immoral and unethical by many.
MeliBio is planning launch into the B2B market focusing on cosmetics and the food and beverage sectors. With the aim of making it more affordable, ethically produced, environmentally friendly, and matching or exceeding the nutrient value of bee-made honey.
