Our understanding of environmentalism has historically been dictated by patriarchal standards; from descriptions of land needing to be conquered by men, or today's understanding of the eco gender gap, heteronormativity is one system of oppression in the environmental movement that does not receive enough attention.

In the first video of our new series 'Conversations with the IE Community', IE council member Isaias Hernandez (he/him) + community member Jesse Galvez (they/them) discuss LGBTQ+ representation in the environmental movement, the relationship between plant-based diets and toxic masculinity, and their own experiences on how their identities impact their existence in eco spaces.
