A Historic Victory for Animal Welfare

Building community‑driven momentum for one of the most significant cage‑free victories in a decade

The Ahold campaign brought together an extraordinary coalition of local advocates, national farm animal welfare organizations, and digital creators to secure one of the most consequential corporate animal welfare commitments in recent history.

At the heart of this work were the local creators, community members, and movement organizers who showed—again and again—that when people speak out in their own communities, companies listen. Their voices helped drive a breakthrough that will improve the lives of millions of animals and set a new industry standard.

Program Context & Growth

Working alongside The Pollination Project, our team coordinated creator strategy within a powerful coalition of local and national nonprofits including The Accountability Board, Compassion in World Farming, Animal Equality, Mercy for Animals, and The Humane League. Together, we focused on a critical piece of the campaign: elevating local voices in the regions where Ahold’s supermarket chains—Hannaford and Food Lion—operate.

Our role was to recruit, train, and support local content creators who could show the public—and Ahold leadership—that this was not an abstract national effort. It was a real, community‑driven movement rooted in Maine, North Carolina, and beyond. By pairing local authenticity with strategic digital support, we helped ensure that the campaign’s message was both credible and impossible to ignore.

Our Theory of Change

Our work in the Ahold campaign was guided by a clear premise:

If we empower local voices to speak out—and equip them with the tools to navigate social media effectively—then companies will see that the demand for change is coming directly from their customers and the communities they serve.

This theory of change rests on four pillars:

1. Discovery

Identify and recruit local advocates who can speak credibly about the impact of Ahold’s policies in their own communities.

2. Support

Provide training, editing support, and strategic guidance to help creators produce compelling, movement‑aligned content.

3. Amplification

Connect local creators with national influencers, NGOs, and media channels to expand the reach of their stories.

4. Community Legitimacy

Demonstrate to Ahold leadership that the call for cage‑free progress is not external pressure—it is a grassroots demand from their own customers.

This approach ensured that the campaign was not only visible, but deeply rooted in the lived experiences of the people Ahold serves.

Metrics & Evidence

Across the campaign, our team helped build one of the strongest local‑voice infrastructures in any recent corporate animal welfare effort.

Campaign Metrics

  • 10+ local content creators recruited
  • 50+ Maine residents featured in social media content
  • Artist‑led influencer initiative supported in North Carolina
  • Dozens of local stories shared across platforms and picked up by news media
  • National influencers engaged to amplify local voices
  • Cross‑organizational collaboration with five major farm animal welfare nonprofits

These numbers reflect more than outputs—they reflect a coordinated, community‑driven strategy that helped shift one of the country’s largest grocers.

Movement-Level Significance

The outcome speaks for itself.

Ahold Delhaize—the 4th largest grocer in the United States, operating more than 2,000 Hannaford, Stop & Shop, The Giant Company, Giant Food, and Food Lion stores—has now published the strongest cage‑free policy of any major conventional grocer in the country.

Their commitments include:

  • A roadmap with benchmarks to fully eliminate caged‑egg cartons
  • Expanded cage‑free offerings and increased cage‑free sales targets
  • Annual public reporting on progress
  • Large, in‑store shelf tags at all 2,000+ locations to help consumers identify cage‑free options
  • Major progress on treatment of pigs, with three divisions already gestation‑crate‑free and the remaining two transitioning within three years

With many major grocers walking back their cage‑free commitments, Ahold has set a new bar—one that will shape industry expectations and accelerate the end of cages nationwide.

A Call to Support Community-Driven Advocacy

The Ahold campaign shows what becomes possible when local voices, national organizations, and digital creators work together toward a shared goal. By investing in this model, we can help build a more resilient, community‑rooted, and strategically sophisticated movement for farm animals.

The momentum is here. The infrastructure is growing. And with continued support, we can ensure that victories like this one become the norm—not the exception.
